This ancient habitation and mountain meadow were developed into a trout farm in the 19th Century. South-facing windows let lots of light inside the old stone farmhouse. Water rushing down small canals will join the river and the nightingales to sing you to sleep.

The vicinity:

St Pierre-le-Rouge is two kilometers from a village with post office, café, and épicerie (general store), and five minutes by foot uphill to the ruined castle of Roland Miraval, the 12th Century French troubador, and the village that bears his name. Twenty-five minutes by car takes you down to the walled city of Carcassonne, and you can reach mountain lakes in a quarter of an hour. The Canal du Midi, which joins the Atlantic to the Mediterranean, is just twenty minutes by car.

Well-marked hiking trails are abundant through the mountains, and there is excellent cycling on our back-country roads. A few segments of ancient Roman roads can be reached by mountain bike or by foot. Of course, you can always sit in sun or shade and relax.

St Pierre-le-Rouge is an artists' home away from home. Beauty is everywhere. Enjoy!
